The Future

• The major commercial events, professionally organized and catered and featuring top bands. If these events judge the market right, they sell out in hours. People get to see large numbers of top bands in a very short space of time, but concerns are high prices, overbearing security and petty crime.
• Smaller boutique festivals, including one-day events and themed parties, sometimes slickly organized, but often eschewing commercial sponsorship in favour of a more rootsy approach, with standards to match. When all goes well they can be fantastic parties, but in a crisis, such as terrible weather or power failure, everything can go pear-shaped pretty quickly.
• Green events, where festivals focus on the fringe side of festival life: the camps, the cafés, alternative communities, sustainable living, spirituality and cooperation. The most commercial of these is the Big Green Gathering, but, taken to extremes, a true rainbow gathering will have no admission fee, no organizers and no money will be exchanged throughout the event.
